Birkin or Kelly?

They cost similar money and are not remotely the same bag. How the two differ in use, capacity, formality and resale — and which suits which owner.

Pre-Owned Hermès Kelly Retourne 32 Bleu De Malte

Birkin or Kelly? They are made in the same workshops, by the same artisans, to the same standard. They cost broadly similar money. And they are not remotely the same bag to own.

Most people arrive at this decision having seen a lot of photographs and carried neither. Photographs are unhelpful here, because almost everything that separates the two is about how they behave rather than how they look.

Birkin or Kelly: the practical difference

A Birkin opens. The flap folds back, the handles fall to the sides, and the bag is a wide-mouthed tote you can reach into with one hand while holding something in the other. It is genuinely quick.

A Kelly does not open, exactly — it is unfastened. Two straps come off their studs, the turn-lock rotates, the flap lifts. It is a small ceremony, perhaps eight seconds, every single time. Owners either find it grounding or find it maddening, and there is very little middle ground.

If you carry a bag through a working day and open it constantly, that difference matters more than anything else on this page.

Capacity

A Birkin holds meaningfully more than a Kelly of the same nominal size, because the Kelly’s trapezoidal shape narrows towards the top and the flap steals depth. A Kelly 28 and a Birkin 30 are closer in usable volume than the numbers suggest, and a Kelly 25 holds noticeably less than a Birkin 25.

The Kelly also has a shoulder strap. That single feature converts it from a hand-carried object into a bag you can wear across the body on a train platform, and for a lot of people it settles the argument on its own.

How they read

The Birkin is the more recognised of the two by a wide margin. That is a benefit or a cost depending entirely on temperament — it is the bag that gets noticed, and some buyers want precisely the opposite.

The Kelly is quieter, older and more formal. In Sellier construction, with its seams stitched on the outside and its corners sharp, it reads almost architecturally. In Retourne, softened and rounded, it is considerably more relaxed. Those two versions of the Kelly differ from each other nearly as much as the Kelly differs from the Birkin, which is why choosing construction is not a detail.

Birkin or Kelly on resale

On the resale market a Kelly generally trades a little below an equivalent Birkin, with the gap narrowing sharply in the smaller sizes and in Sellier construction — a Sellier Kelly 25 in Epsom is among the most sought configurations Hermès makes and does not trade at a discount to anything.

Both hold value far better than almost any other handbag. Neither is an investment, they are not a regulated asset, and nothing here is investment advice — but if resale liquidity is part of your thinking, the Birkin is the more liquid of the two simply because more people are looking for one.

Wear points

Worth knowing before you buy pre-owned, because they differ.

On a Birkin, look at the four base corners, the handle bases where they meet the body, and the plating on the turn-lock. Handles darken with hand oils, which is normal; splitting at the handle base is not, and is expensive.

On a Kelly, look at the two front straps and particularly their tips, which take the most handling of any part of the bag. On Sellier examples also check the edge paint along the exterior seams, since that is exactly where age concentrates.

So which

Buy a Birkin if you open your bag constantly, carry a lot, and are untroubled by being recognised.

Buy a Kelly if you want a shoulder strap, prefer something more formal and less announced, and are not irritated by the ritual of unfastening it.

If you genuinely cannot decide, the honest answer is that the Kelly is the more beautiful object and the Birkin is the more useful one — and that most people who own both reach for the Birkin more often than they expected to.
