The Kelly predates the Birkin by nearly forty years. It is a trapezoidal single-handled bag with a fold-over flap, two straps and a turn-lock, and it is built in two quite different constructions that change its character completely.
Sellier and Retourne
Sellier is stitched from the outside, leaving the seams visible on the exterior. The result is crisp, formal and architectural — sharp corners, a defined edge, a bag that stands to attention. It is usually made in a rigid leather, most often Epsom, because a soft leather cannot hold that line.
Retourne is stitched inside out and then turned, hiding the seams and rounding the edges. It is softer, more relaxed and easier to carry, and it suits Togo and Clémence. If you intend to wear the bag rather than display it, Retourne is usually the more comfortable choice.
This is the single most important decision when buying a Kelly, and it is not a detail — the two versions look and feel like different bags.
Sizes
The 25 and the mini 20 carry substantial premiums and very little content. The 28 is the most balanced, and the most commonly sought. The 32 is a working size that trades more reasonably, and the 35 and above are increasingly niche.
Against the Birkin
A Kelly is more formal, holds less, and is slower to open — the straps and turn-lock are a small ceremony every time. It also draws less attention, which for a number of buyers is precisely the appeal. At resale it generally trades a little below an equivalent Birkin, with the gap narrowing sharply in the smaller sizes and in Sellier construction.
What to inspect
The base corners and the two front straps take the most wear, and the strap tips are where a hard life shows first. On Sellier examples, look closely at the exterior seams and the edge paint along them, since that is exactly where age and handling concentrate. Every Kelly here is photographed at those points specifically.
