Chanel Hobo Bags: Sizes, Leathers, Colours and What to Check

Chanel hobo bags explained: the Mini, Small, Medium and Maxi compared to scale, the leathers and colours to choose, and what to check before you buy.

For years the Classic Flap was the only Chanel bag most people wanted. Now a softer shape is catching up. Chanel hobo bags, with their slouchy drawstring body, diamond quilting and leather-woven chain, have become the house’s most talked-about everyday bag, alongside the current Chanel handbag line. This guide explains what makes the hobo different, how the four sizes compare, which leathers and colours to look for, and what to check before you buy one.

What makes a Chanel hobo different

A hobo is a crescent-shaped bag that slumps a little when you put it down and moulds to your side when you wear it. Chanel’s current version keeps that relaxed silhouette but adds structure where it matters. The body is quilted in the signature diamond pattern, the top gathers with a leather drawstring threaded through gold eyelets, and a CC clasp sits at the centre of the closure. Two side pockets fold out from each end, and the chain is the classic interlaced leather and metal, long enough to wear on the shoulder.

The result is a bag that feels far less formal than a flap. There is no turn-lock to open, nothing to fold, and the opening is wide enough to drop your hand straight in. That ease is a large part of why it sells: it is a Chanel you can carry every day without thinking about it.

Chanel hobo sizes compared

Chanel hobo bags sizes compared to scale: Mini, Small, Medium and Maxi
The four sizes drawn to the same scale, with measurements from our own listings.

The drawstring Chanel hobo bags come in three sizes, and a fourth, the Maxi, takes a slightly different form.

  • Mini, about 22 × 15 × 10 cm. A phone, a card case and a lipstick. It is the size that sells out first at boutique and moves fastest on the secondary market.
  • Small, about 27 × 20 × 11 cm. The everyday size: room for a phone, a cardholder, keys and sunglasses without looking bulky.
  • Medium, about 29 × 29 × 14 cm. Noticeably taller, and the one to choose if you carry a full wallet, a small pouch and a water bottle.
  • Maxi, about 36 × 33 × 13 cm. A true slouch hobo with a rolled leather top handle as well as the chain. It reads closer to a work bag and holds a tablet comfortably.

If you are torn between two sizes, think about the strap drop as much as the body. The Mini hangs at about 28 cm, which sits just at the waist, while the Medium’s longer drop of about 38 cm lets it rest comfortably under the arm over a coat.

Leathers and materials

The Chanel hobo in nine materials: caviar, calfskin, suede, denim, bouclé tweed, shearling, calf hair, perforated calfskin and raffia
The same shape in nine materials, all from our current stock.

Because the shape is simple, the material does most of the talking.

Caviar

Caviar is grained, pressed calfskin and the most practical choice. It resists scratches, shrugs off light rain and keeps its quilting crisp. For a first hobo, a black caviar Small with gold hardware is hard to fault. If you are weighing it against smoother leathers, our guide to caviar or lambskin covers how each one ages.

Calfskin and suede

Smooth calfskin has a soft sheen and makes the slouch look more fluid. Suede is warmer and more tactile, and in camel or grey it suits autumn perfectly, but it needs protecting from water and from denim transfer.

Seasonal statements

Then there are the pieces Chanel makes for a single season: washed denim, black and gold bouclé tweed, shearling-trimmed calfskin, cheetah-print calf hair, perforated calfskin and calfskin edged in raffia. These are produced in small runs and are not reissued, which is exactly why collectors seek them out.

Colours and hardware

Twelve Chanel hobo colours: light pink, coral, red, burgundy, brown, beige, metallic gold, yellow, green, light blue, navy and grey
Twelve shades, from soft pink to navy.

Black remains the most requested colour, and beige is a close second because it works with everything from denim to tailoring. The hobo also suits colour better than most Chanel shapes, since the softer silhouette keeps a bright shade from looking stiff. Light pink, coral and light blue are the summer favourites; burgundy, brown and green carry through autumn and winter; metallic gold is the evening option.

Hardware changes the mood more than you might expect. Bright gold is classic, antique gold looks warmer and slightly vintage, and ruthenium, a dark gunmetal grey, gives black caviar a cooler, more modern edge. Silver suits grey, navy and white.

How to wear a Chanel hobo

Chanel hobo bags are at their best with relaxed clothes. Wear a Small on the shoulder with a trench, jeans and loafers, or let a Mini hang at the waist with a slip dress in the evening. The Medium and Maxi work well with tailoring and oversized knits, where a structured flap might look too precise. Because the drawstring top is open, keep valuables in an inner pouch when travelling.

What to check before you buy

  • Measurements. Compare width, height and depth, not just the size name, because the Medium is much taller than the Small.
  • Corners and base. On pre-owned pieces, look at the four lower corners and the base in natural light for rubbing.
  • Drawstring and eyelets. Check that the leather cord runs smoothly and that the eyelets show no lifting.
  • Hardware film. New pieces often arrive with protective plastic on the CC; that is normal and a good sign.
  • Season. Ask which collection the bag comes from. Seasonal materials are not repeated, so a denim or tweed hobo will not come back.

Every listing we publish photographs the exact bag that ships, from every side, with its own measurements.
