Start with the paperwork
Papers date the watch and tie it to a reference number. Because a mismatch between the papers and the caseback is the loudest warning sign in the market, we check that pairing first. Meanwhile, a missing box costs less than most buyers expect. In short, papers matter more than packaging.
Read the case, not the dial
Polishing removes metal, and it softens the sharp edges that define a case. Therefore hold the watch at an angle and look along the lugs. Sharp bevels suggest light polishing, while rounded lugs suggest years of it. In addition, check the lug holes, since heavy polishing widens them.
Dials are harder to judge from photographs. For example, a refinished dial often prints its text slightly off centre. Above all, ask for a caseback shot and a dial shot at full resolution.
Then the movement and the service history
A mechanical movement needs oil, and oil dries out. As a result, a watch that has not run for a decade will need work, whatever the dial looks like. Ask when it was last serviced, and by whom. For context, an independent Swiss body rates chronometer accuracy rather than the brand itself, and the COSC publishes that standard. However, treat a recent service by an unnamed workshop with care, because parts availability varies by brand.
Quartz is simpler. In that case, ask only when the battery was last changed and whether the gasket was replaced with it.

Condition, papers and reference drive the price, in that order. Similarly, a rare dial colour can move a common reference by a third. Therefore compare like with like before you decide anything is expensive. Meanwhile, remember that import charges land on top, and we set those out in VAT, duty and the true landed cost.
