Goyard’s classic colours are black, tan and grey, so a purple Goyard bag stops people in the street. The Blueberry Purple Goyardine is a limited-edition shade: a deep violet base with the chevron dotted over it in three tones of blue and white. It reads as purple in daylight and close to navy at night, which makes it far easier to wear than it sounds. Here is why it works, which shapes it comes in and how to choose.
Why a purple Goyard bag works
Goyard has painted trunks in bold colours since the 1800s. In those days, clients ordered their canvas in a house colour, then had their initials and stripes painted on by hand, a service the Maison still calls marquage. The trunk below, made for the Duke of Windsor, shows how well strong colour sits on the chevron. Next to it in the shop window is a plum Goyard bag, proof that the deeper purples have been part of the house look for a long time.

As a result, the purple works today for the same reason. The chevron breaks the colour up, so it never looks flat, and the natural leather trim warms it. In addition, the yellow lining of the smaller bags adds one more contrast when you open them.

The five shapes

- Saint Louis PM (13.4 × 11 × 5.9 in). The everyday tote. Unlined and very light, with a matching pouch. $3,675.
- Saint Louis GM (15.7 × 13 × 7.8 in). The big one, with room for a laptop and a jumper. $3,850.
- Anjou Mini (8 × 8 × 4 in). Reversible, with Goyardine on one side and smooth purple leather on the other. $4,165.
- Vendôme Nano (6.3 × 5 × 2.8 in). A domed top-handle bag with a zip and a crossbody strap, lined in yellow. $4,165.
- Saigon Structure Nano (5.7 × 4.5 × 2.75 in). The rarest: rigid, with a natural leather handle and yellow goatskin lining. $6,615.
How to choose your purple Goyard bag
If you want one bag for work and weekends, pick the Saint Louis PM. It takes a phone, wallet, tablet and a scarf, and the colour does the talking. On the other hand, choose the GM if you carry a laptop or travel often. The Anjou Mini is the smart pick for a smaller bag that still fits a phone and keys, and its reversible body gives you a plain purple leather bag on quieter days.
The two nanos are for evenings and for collectors. The Vendôme Nano is softer and easier to wear crossbody. By contrast, the Saigon Structure Nano is the most architectural shape Goyard makes, and in this colour it is very hard to find. For more on the tote, read our Goyard Saint Louis buyer’s guide.
How to wear it
Treat the purple as a dark neutral. It looks right with navy, grey, camel and denim, and it lifts an all-black outfit. With brown, however, keep the shade warm, such as tan or cognac, to echo the leather trim. Above all, avoid other strong prints; the chevron is pattern enough.

For a personal touch, Goyard boutiques can paint your initials and stripes on most bags, just as they did on the trunks above. See the Maison Goyard website for boutique services.
