Some purchases you make with a click. Others deserve a proper viewing: good light, a mirror, and someone who can tell you exactly where a bag was made and when. That idea is behind our Her Birkin Bags San Diego boutique at 7007 Friars Road in Mission Valley, where authenticated Hermès, Chanel, fine jewellery and collector watches are shown by appointment.
This is a walk through the store: what you will find on the shelves, and how to make the most of a visit, whether you are buying your first Birkin or adding a rare exotic to a collection you have been building for years. The story was also published on Medium as Inside Her Birkin Bags San Diego.
From Amsterdam to San Diego
We opened in Amsterdam in 2010 and spent more than a decade building a reputation in the Netherlands for authentic Hermès and Chanel on the secondary market. San Diego is our second shop. It gives West Coast clients somewhere to see pieces in person instead of judging leather grain and hardware from a phone screen.
The address, 7007 Friars Rd, San Diego, CA 92108, is a short drive from downtown, Mission Hills, La Jolla and Coronado. You can pair a viewing with lunch, park easily, and be back on the I-8 or I-163 within minutes.
First impressions: the storefront
The facade is cream stone with gold lettering, a small handbag-outline logo above the door and the words “Authenticated Luxury” beneath the name. Navy awnings shade two tall display windows. On most days those windows hold Birkins in fuchsia, black, taupe and gold, a few Kellys, a silk carré or two, and white orchids that make the leather colours stand out.
Inside, you notice the lighting first. Every shelf is backlit in warm white so you see the true colour of a bag, which matters more than people expect. Etoupe, Gold, Craie and Vert Mangrove all look different under daylight, halogen and a camera flash. We set the room up to show them accurately.

The handbag wall
Most visitors head straight for the illuminated shelving on the right, where the Birkins live. We arrange them the way most clients shop: by size first, then leather, then hardware.
Birkin 25. The most requested size and the deepest part of the collection. Recent examples include a Birkin 25 in Orange Minium Togo with palladium hardware, a quiet Birkin 25 in Béton Togo with gold hardware, and a Birkin 25 in Bleu Hydra for anyone who wants colour that still goes with denim.
Birkin 30. Big enough for a laptop sleeve and a day’s worth of essentials. The Birkin 30 in Vert Mangrove Togo and the fiery Birkin 30 in Feu Togo with gold hardware are two of the pieces clients ask about most.
Special orders. Look for bags stamped with the small horseshoe, the mark of a Hermès special order (HSS). These combine interior and exterior colours, or contrast stitching, that you will not find in a standard boutique allocation. Our horseshoe-stamp collection is worth a look if you want a Birkin nobody else at the table will be carrying.
If you already know what you want, filter the full Birkin collection online before you book, so your viewing starts with a shortlist.
A quick guide to Hermès leathers
Choosing the leather matters as much as choosing the colour, and it is the question we hear most often. A short primer before you visit:
- Togo. Grained calfskin that resists scratches and holds its shape well. The most popular choice for a first Birkin because it forgives daily life.
- Epsom. Embossed, lightweight and very structured. Colours look crisp and it wipes clean easily, which suits lighter shades.
- Swift. Smooth and soft with a slight sheen. It takes colour beautifully but shows scratches, so it suits a more careful owner.
- Box calf. The original Hermès leather, glossy and smooth. It develops a rich patina, and scratches become part of its character.
- Chèvre. Goatskin with a fine, tight grain. Light, durable and often used for smaller bags like the Constance and Kelly Pochette.
- Exotics. Crocodile, alligator and ostrich, found in our exotic handbags collection. These carry the highest prices and the longest waiting lists at retail.
Handling these side by side is the quickest way to find out which one you like. Many clients arrive sure they want Swift and leave with Togo, or the other way round.
Beyond the Birkin: Kelly, Constance and Chanel
The Birkin gets the headlines, but the Kelly is often the bag long-time collectors love most. We carry both Sellier (structured, sharp edges) and Retourne (softer, stitched inside) styles. A Kelly Retourne 25 in Béton Togo is an easy everyday choice, while the Kelly 42 Maxi in Fauve Barenia Faubourg is a statement travel bag that will darken beautifully over the years. Browse the whole Kelly edit for sizes from 20 to 42.
For evenings, the Constance is hard to beat. Its H-clasp is one of the most recognisable pieces of hardware in fashion, and we keep several in the compact 18 size, including a Constance 18 in Black Box leather with gold hardware and a Constance 18 in Aqua Chèvre.
Chanel has its own section near the back. The Classic Flap collection covers the essentials, from a black calfskin flap with gold hardware to a white shiny caviar single flap that looks made for a San Diego summer.
Scarves, belts and the finishing touches
The table near the entrance, with the leopard-print silks and gold boxes, is where the smaller pieces live. These are often how people start with Hermès, and they make some of the best gifts in the store.
The Hermès scarves collection covers the classic 90cm carré, twillies you can tie around a Birkin handle, and larger shawls for cooler coastal evenings. The belts edit includes the reversible H belt, and charms such as the Rodeo and Oran add personality to a plain bag.
Wallets and card holders sit nearby in the Hermès wallets collection, and fans of monogram canvas will find a small, well-edited Goyard section, from Saint Louis totes to compact card cases. They make a lighter everyday alternative when a Birkin feels like too much bag.
The jewellery cases
The low black cases in the centre of the store hold fine jewellery, and many visitors end up spending the most time here.
Van Cleef & Arpels. The Alhambra motif is the jewellery equivalent of a Birkin: instantly recognised, endlessly stackable and a steady store of value. We carry pre-owned pieces such as the Vintage Alhambra 5-motif bracelet in turquoise and yellow gold and the Magic Alhambra ring in onyx and white gold. See the full Van Cleef & Arpels collection for necklaces and earrings.
Cartier. For something that works as well with a T-shirt as with an evening dress, try the Juste un Clou pavé ring in white gold or the playful Indomptables de Cartier zebra ring. There is more in the Cartier edit.
Hermès jewellery. A natural companion to the bags. The Amulettes Constance necklace in rose gold with diamonds shrinks the famous clasp into a pendant, and the Amulettes Kelly necklace does the same for the Kelly. The Hermès jewellery collection also includes Chaîne d’Ancre earrings and bracelets.
A watch counter for serious collectors
Watches are often the biggest surprise for first-time visitors. Alongside the bags sits a small, carefully chosen selection of haute horlogerie, much of it the kind of reference you would normally only see at auction.
Highlights include the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Perpetual Calendar Rattrapante in rose gold, one of the most complicated watches Glashütte produces, and the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Grande Sonnerie Carillon Supersonnerie “Samurai”. Vintage lovers should ask to see the 1975 Audemars Piguet 5666 in yellow gold or the elegant 1990 Audemars Piguet Charleston, a dress watch that suits a smaller wrist.
The full range is in our watches collection, and there are Hermès timepieces in the Hermès watch edit if you would like a watch to match your bag.
Why the authentication matters
The words on the sign, “Authenticated Luxury”, are the whole point of the business. We authenticate every piece in-house before it goes on sale, and each listing states condition plainly: corner wear, hardware patina, and the year of production where the date stamp can be read. What you see in the photographs is what you get.
Seeing a bag in person makes that process transparent. We can show you the heat stamp, the stitching, the date stamp and the feel of the leather, and explain what separates genuine Togo grain from a convincing imitation. Our authentication page explains the process in detail if you want to read up before you visit.

A few tips from regular clients:
- Book ahead and send a shortlist. Tell us which sizes, leathers or references you want to see, and we will have them ready in the viewing room.
- Bring the things you carry every day. A 25 and a 30 feel very different once your phone, wallet and sunglasses are inside.
- Look at hardware in daylight. Gold, rose gold and palladium read differently near the window than under the shelf lights.
- Ask about new arrivals. Stock moves quickly, and our new arrivals page is updated regularly.
