Rouge H

The deep, dark, almost-brown red — the most serious of the house's many reds.

Showing all 14 results

Hermès makes a great many reds, and buyers routinely confuse them. Rouge H is the darkest and the oldest: a deep oxblood that leans brown in low light and reads burgundy in daylight. It is nothing like the bright, saturated Rouge Casaque or the orange-leaning Rouge Vif.

The character of it

Rouge H is a serious colour. It has none of the immediacy of a bright red — it does not announce itself across a room — and it behaves far more like a dark neutral than like a statement shade. Against black, navy, grey and camel it works the way a deep brown would, with more depth.

It is at its best in leathers with some gloss or grain to catch light. In Box Calf it is extraordinary, developing a patina that pushes it further towards oxblood with age. In Togo it is matte and softer. In Swift it deepens further still.

Hardware

Gold is the traditional pairing and the more common one, warming the colour and reinforcing its heritage character. Palladium is a sharper, more modern reading and less often seen, which makes it more interesting to some buyers and harder to sell to others.

Wearing it

Rouge H is far more versatile than people expect from a red, precisely because it is so dark. It is a reasonable single-bag choice in a way a bright red never is.

It also hides marks well — dark colours forgive handling — with the usual caveat that corner wear shows as a lighter edge where the pale under-layer of the leather comes through.

Value

Rouge H holds value better than most non-neutral colours, because it functions as a neutral for a large part of the market. It is not as liquid as Noir or Étoupe, but it rarely sits unsold, and vintage Box Calf examples have a dedicated following of their own.
