Étoupe

Étoupe sits between grey and taupe, and refuses to commit to either. In daylight it reads warm, closer to a soft mushroom. Under artificial light it cools and greys off. That shifting quality is precisely why it has become the most collected neutral in the house.

Why it works

Étoupe solves a problem that black does not. It is neutral enough to go with everything, but it is not severe, and it does not read as a work bag. Against navy, cream, camel, grey and olive it is easier than black; against black itself it is a considered choice rather than a default.

It also photographs well in almost any light, which is not a trivial consideration for a piece many owners will resell one day.

Leather

Étoupe is at its best in Togo, where the matte grain lets the colour shift properly. In Epsom it flattens slightly and reads cooler and more uniform — excellent on structured shapes. In Clémence the larger grain gives it more depth and a softer, dustier tone.

Wear

Mid-tone neutrals are the most forgiving colours to own. Étoupe hides light marks better than a pale colour and shows corner wear far less than black, because the under-layer of the leather is close in tone to the surface.

Its one vulnerability is colour transfer from dark denim and dyed leather, which can leave a faint shadow on the back panel over time. It is usually treatable if caught early and much harder once set.

Value

Étoupe is among the strongest neutrals at resale, consistently close behind Noir and ahead of most seasonal colours. It has the rare distinction of being both a safe choice and a genuinely admired one — it is very seldom bought as a compromise.
