Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe has been making watches in Geneva since 1839 and remains family-owned, which is unusual at this level and explains a good deal about how the catalogue is run: references are retired rather than restyled, and production is deliberately small.

The Calatrava, introduced in 1932 with reference 96, is the house's statement of what a dress watch should be. Round, thin, unadorned, legible: it is the reference against which other dress watches are measured, and it is the second-largest part of what we hold.

The Complications family is the largest. The term covers everything a watch does beyond telling the time, and at Patek that most often means an annual calendar, a moonphase, a second time zone or a chronograph. The annual calendar, patented by the house in 1996, needs correcting only once a year, at the end of February. The Grand Complications sit above them, gathering perpetual calendars, minute repeaters and split-seconds chronographs into single watches.

The Nautilus, drawn by Gérald Genta in 1976, took the house into steel sports watches with a porthole-derived case and an integrated bracelet, and it is now the most sought-after and the hardest to buy at retail. The Aquanaut followed in 1997, younger in character, on a composite strap. The Golden Ellipse, from 1968, remains the quiet outlier, built on the proportions of the golden section.

Our stock runs from the 1960s to the present year. On Patek more than most houses, provenance carries weight: the Extract from the Archives, the original certificate and the box are part of what is being bought, and their absence shows in price. Each listing states the reference, the case metal and size, the movement and the condition, and says plainly what accompanies the watch. For the broader checks, see watch complications explained.
