Chèvre Mysore
Goatskin with a fine natural grain and a lustre that catches light along the ridges.
Nothing in stock matches that combination.
Much of what we source never reaches the site. Tell us the size, leather and hardware you want and we will look for it.
Chèvre Mysore is goatskin, and it behaves nothing like the calfskins that surround it. The grain is fine and naturally ridged, and it carries a distinct sheen that shifts as the bag moves — light catches the raised grain and drops into the valleys, giving the leather a depth that photographs rarely capture.
Why it is prized
It is light, it is rigid, and it is remarkably resistant to scratching. For a small structured bag those three things together are close to ideal, which is why Chèvre appears so often on the Constance and on smaller Kellys, and why it has a following out of all proportion to how much of it exists.
Goat hides are small. That is the whole supply story: a Birkin 35 requires panels that a single hide struggles to yield cleanly, so larger Chèvre bags are correspondingly scarce and priced accordingly.
Living with it
Chèvre holds its shape firmly and does not slouch. It resists water better than smooth leathers, and its natural grain hides handling marks well.
Its one quirk is that the ridged grain can flatten slightly at high-contact points — under the handles, along the top edge — producing a subtle change in sheen rather than visible wear. It reads as character rather than damage, but it is worth knowing what you are looking at on a pre-owned example.
At resale
Chèvre trades at a premium to Togo and Epsom in equivalent configurations, driven by scarcity rather than practicality. It is less liquid than the common grained leathers — the pool of buyers specifically seeking Chèvre is smaller — but that pool knows exactly what it wants, which tends to make the right piece sell quickly and the wrong one sit.
Chèvre in a bright colour is where the leather is at its most striking, because the lustre amplifies saturation in a way a matte grain cannot.
